A letter from Jane Bunn, Chair of Stewardship Committee, Sep 2011

Dear Friends,

There’s a chill in the air, families are back in their busy school schedules and before we know it, we’ll be in the holiday celebration season.  At St. Peter and St. Paul, we have a lot to celebrate now—our membership rolls are growing, weekly worship attendance continues to top past years, children and youth programs are bustling and you continue to be faithful in your time, talent and treasure support.

We kicked our stewardship canvas for 2012 on Sunday, September 25th.  We will retire the loan on our building very soon because of your sacrificial giving over the last three years, in spite of the economic challenges we have all felt.  What does stewardship mean to you?  It’s a personal thing between you and God.  We have an amazing opportunity this year to ask and answer the question, “What is God asking us to do next?”

Many of you heard Bishop Wimberly’s sermon on August 8th about Fear and Faith.  I was touched by his words that day and recently listened again on the website.  He said that we learn faith by “doing faith” and that Jesus comes to us in the storms of our lives to deliver us.  Regardless of how the winds are blowing, He is there for each of us.  Jesus asked Peter to “step out of the boat.”  I believe He is asking each of us to do the same as we will now have the financial “freedom to grow in Christ.”  I recently had the profound honor of hearing Deputy Chief Jay Jonas, New York City Fire Department, tell of his experience in the North Tower on September 11, 2001.  He simply said that “there were people who needed help, and that is what he and his men were going to do.”  As a parish, we know the same thing, and the opportunity is ours.

Sunday, October 30th will be Commitment Sunday for 2012.  I ask you to join me in thoughtful prayer, be still and listen as God tells us what is next for St. Peter and St. Paul.   Make your personal commitment to Him and “STEP OUT OF THE BOAT AND STEP FORWARD IN FAITH!

Sincerely,

Jane Bunn
