Who are our Friends At Holy Comforter?

holy_comforter.jpg
Holy Comforter is an Episcopal church that has been in Southeast Atlanta for over 100 years. In nearly every decade of that history, urban growth has changed the face of the neighborhoods around Holy Comforter, leading them to ask again and again, “Who is my neighbor whom God is calling on me to love?”

In the mid 1980’s, the answer was clear. By then, Holy Comforter was firmly situated in a neighborhood that had many personal care homes for persons with mental illnesses. And so the people of Holy Comforter did what came naturally to them: they simply reached out to their neighbors, many of whom lived in these personal care homes. It is critical to understand that Holy Comforter does not run a program to help persons with mental illness; rather these people are the church. These people, who are often alienated in society, are knit together by the love of Jesus Christ at Holy Comforter.

“Saturday Night Live” at Holy Comforter
Once a month we gather at St. Peter & St. Paul and caravan/car-pool to this church where we join these folks in a rousing song service for about an hour, then we serve and join them in a big meal, (funded through generous  donations) including carry-out of planned leftovers.
We have been doing “SNL” since the spring of 2003 and in that time have gotten to know these people as children of Christ who crave fellowship and appreciate our friendship.  From our very first “SNL” (their affectionate name for this event) where 12 of us furnished and prepared the meal and led the song service, to a current group that sometime includes 20 to 30 people joining in making this happen, and have collectively involved several hundred people.  Almost everyone participating agrees that this is not only a wonderful outreach effort, but it brings riches to our lives that we never imagined or expected. All are welcome to join us!

Holy Comforter Clothes Closet
Every Tuesday several people from our church go to Holy Comforter from
10:00 a.m. to Noon to organize, maintain and distribute much needed items to people of this community.  So many things that we consider necessities and take for granted are desperately needed by those less fortunate among us.  Soap, shampoo, deodorant, tooth paste and toothbrushes, shoes, t-shirts, pants, underwear – are always in need.

How can you help?
If you have used but serviceable items that can be handed down, they can be put to good use by dropping them off at the St. Peter & St. Paul Outreach closet in the Holy Comforter Bin.  They will be taken down to Holy Comforter on Tuesdays to be distributed to those in need. Also, we always need more volunteers to help maintain the closet and distribute clothing on Tuesday mornings.

We invite you to join us in this outreach ministry with the assurance that we are part of a community that cares and shares in ways that reflect the example of Jesus Christ.
