Discipleship and Mentoring
“…And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another…” Hebrews 10:24-25

Dear Friends in Christ,
Discipleship is a churchy word with broad meaning. Christian disciples are those who follow Jesus and learn from him. But Jesus told us to make disciples of others. So as disciples, we both learn and teach. Discipleship is not merely about acquiring information, however, Discipleship is about a way of life—living in relationship with Jesus and his people. A good way to think of this is mentoring.
A mentor helps someone to learn and grow and develop. A mentor walks alongside for encouragement and coaching and development, sharing from what the mentor has learned. Who is a mentor to you in the Christian life? To whom are you a mentor in the Christian life?
One of the ways this plays out in the life of the church is in our stewardship of ministry. I have seen in several churches the way ministry leaders easily fall into the habit of saying “oh, I’ll just do this myself—it is easier that way.” But this leads to burn-out (even with complaints that no one is helping!). And when they do burn out, no one wants to step into that position. Others say “I can’t possibly do that job all by myself!” And of course, they can’t. They shouldn’t. But that is the example they have seen in action.
Instead of this cycle of burnout that stresses ministry, why not try mentoring? Invite people to share in ministry along with you, encourage them in their development, and empower them to lead. Then look for new opportunities for you to learn and grow and support the growth of others. If you are not leading, find a mentor—don’t try to do it yourself. Seek the support and collaboration of others. This is healthy for the body of Christ, good stewardship of the talents God has developed in you.
This is true not just institutionally, but spiritually and relationally as well. God sets us in communities so that we might thrive together, grow closer to God together, and serve joyfully and fruitfully together, as we grow and help others to grow.
Who are your Christian mentors? To whom are you a Christian mentor?
Yours in Christ,
-Tom
